Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the largest of the immunoglobulin isotypes and the first antibody produced in response to initial antigen exposure, making it a key marker of acute or primary infection. It exists predominantly as a pentamer in serum and plays an important role in complement activation and early immune defence. Elevated IgM levels are clinically significant in conditions such as Waldenström macroglobulinaemia, primary immunodeficiency, and acute infectious disease. Detection of IgM is routinely used in serology to distinguish between primary and secondary immune responses. Anti-human IgM antibodies are essential reagents in immunoassay development for the detection of early-stage immune responses.
