Rheumatoid Factor antigen

AROTEC's Rheumatoid Factor (RF) antigen (Human IgG Fc fragment) is purified from human plasma and can be used to detect rheumatoid factors in patient sera. Rheumatoid factors are a subcategory of immunoglobulins that specifically bind to the Fc regions of IgG. Elevated concentrations of rheumatoid factors are often correlated with a more severe course of the disease. IgM RF may precede the onset of RA by several years. In established RA, high titer serum IgM RF indicate poor prognosis.

Rheumatoid Factors are the best-known diagnostic markers for rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and the presence of rheumatoid factors is an integral part of the current ACR criteria for classification of RA. RFs are present in the serum of 75-80% of patients with RA at some time during the disease course. However, RFs are also found in the serum of patients with infectious and autoimmune diseases, hyperglobulinemia, B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders and in the aged population.

The RF test can be used to help diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or to distinguish RA from other forms of arthritis or other conditions that cause similar symptoms. People with RA may also have other connective tissue disorders or conditions, such as Raynaud phenomenon, scleroderma, autoimmune thyroid disorders, and systemic lupus erythematosus, and may display symptoms of these disorders as well. The RF test is one tool among others that can be used to help make a diagnosis when RA is suspected.
